One facet is that it just comes down to sheer technique : the way you bend will greatly influence what the setup of the guitar is. With the bending idea, I had to think about it a bit and I think I came to this conclusion. On my PRS and most strats I've set up, I do 1/16. Bending strings is a little easier as well.įrom working on my own guitars, I like to feel it out on any new guitar I buy but generally on most guitars I keep action at about 1/16 (1.5mm) treble side and maybe a little bit higher than that on the bass side if at all (3/32, 1.7mm). There can be an increased potential in having fret buzz though if you go too low, have a high fret, and/or haven't adjusted the truss rod. Hand fatigue is greatly diminished meaning you could play for longer if necessary. Low action increases playability by allowing for less pressure needed to fret notes making it beneficial for shredders or just people who like to play fast in general. If you play with your hands more than with a pick, having a higher action may be somewhat beneficial to you as you can "grab" more of the string. I'd argue that a high action causes you to think a little more about what you play due to the increased effort necessary to play. It also helps with slide playing of course.

High action ensures a clearer note definition that may possibly have slightly more sustain than a string that's lower but that seems to be more due to interaction between the pickups and the strings.
